CURRICULUM VITAE of MARTIN EIDELBERG
Martin Eidelberg was born in New York City in 1941. After attending Columbia University and graduating with a B.A. degree (cum laude) in 1961, he pursued graduate studies in art history at Princeton University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1965 with a thesis on Watteau’s Drawings, Their Use and Significance.
He taught at Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, from 1964 until his retirement in 2002, attaining the rank of Professor of Art History and is presently Professor emeritus.
Dr. Eidelberg has two principal fields of research. He has published widely on the drawings and paintings of Antoine Watteau, as well as on many of the artists associated with him, particularly Claude Gillot, Claude III Audran, Pierre Antoine Quillard, and Philipe Mercier. He is currently preparing a catalogue raisonné of Watteau's paintings, A Watteau Abecedario.
Dr. Eidelberg’s second field of specialization is modern decorative arts. In addition to publishing extensively on the American Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau, with particular emphasis on American ceramics and the work of Louis C. Tiffany, he has also written widely about mid-20th century design.
